"As a single mother raising a son, I know firsthand the joys, sacrifices, fears, and challenges that come with nurturing a young Black boy into manhood."
Tanya Shields
As a single mother, Tanya Shields experienced the responsibility of raising her son while navigating the challenges, uncertainties, and hopes shared by many parents. Through her journey, she recognized the importance of mentorship, positive role models, educational opportunities, and community support in helping young Black boys reach their full potential.
As she connected with other single mothers, she discovered a common desire: to provide their sons with the guidance, encouragement, and opportunities needed to thrive. That shared vision became the foundation of Guide Hymn Organization.
Guided by a commitment to mentorship, leadership, and opportunity.
To guide, empower, and uplift young Black males raised by single mothers through mentorship, education, life skills, and service-based initiatives that foster personal growth, purpose, and positive social impact, helping them grow into confident, responsible, and successful men.
A world where every Black boy—regardless of household structure—has the support, guidance, and opportunities needed to thrive.
Guide Hymn serves Black boys who are being raised in single-mother households by providing additional layers of support that complement the love and dedication they already receive at home.
We recognize the strength, sacrifice, and resilience of single mothers. Our goal is not to replace what already exists, but to strengthen it through mentorship, positive role models, educational opportunities, and community support.
By helping young men build confidence, leadership skills, and meaningful connections, we create pathways for long-term growth and success.
We are committed to creating opportunities that help young men thrive academically, socially, emotionally, and personally.
Connecting young men with positive role models.
Supporting academic growth and achievement.
Developing confidence and leadership skills.
Building strong relationships and lasting support networks.
I founded this organization for my son. I founded it for the countless mothers who are working tirelessly every day to build brighter futures for their children. Most importantly, I founded it for the young men whose lives will shape the next generation of leaders, innovators, fathers, and change-makers. My hope is that every boy who walks through our doors will know that he is valued, supported, and capable of greatness. And every mother will know that she is not alone. Together, we are building stronger boys, stronger families, and stronger communities.
